A Different Take on Business Planning: Why Reflecting on Your Year is the Key to Growing Your Real Estate Business
Dec 04, 2024Every December, like clockwork, I’d sit down with my planner and start scribbling out big goals for the next year. “Sell X more houses,” “Get Y more leads,” “Finally figure out social media. 😅” You know the drill. It felt productive. But, if I’m honest, those goals often fell flat.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that I was skipping a crucial step: looking back before moving forward. I was running full speed ahead without pausing to figure out what had actually worked—and what had derailed me.
The moment I changed that habit? Everything shifted. It was the same year I created my Effortless Closing Machine (ECM). Reflecting on my year became the secret to not just setting better goals but also building a business that finally felt like mine—a machine that could work for me year after year.
The Year That Changed Everything
Let me take you back a few years.
My first two years in real estate were spent in survival mode. I was chasing every lead, saying yes to every client, and juggling a million tasks that didn’t seem to get me any closer to where I wanted to be. I was putting in so much effort, but nothing was working.
At the end of each year, I’d do what every agent is taught to do: plan out how many closings I needed to make X dollars. Then I’d break it down—how many appointments I needed for those closings, and how many phone calls it would take to get those appointments.
I’d tell myself, This will be the year it all comes together. This will be the year I break free from $50K GCI and finally hit six figures.
But it didn’t happen.
That December, exhausted and frustrated, I decided to do something different. Instead of rushing to set new goals, I grabbed a notebook, poured myself a strong cup of coffee, and wrote down everything I could remember about the past year—the good, the bad, the things that made me proud, and the things I never wanted to repeat.
As I looked at that messy page of notes, patterns started to emerge. I realized I was missing the funnel before the funnel—the thing that would make all my effort actually work. I was missing my Magic Key!
The Little Aha Moments That Will Change Your Business
First, I noticed which clients had been a dream to work with—and which had drained my energy. The dreamy clients weren’t just easier; they were also more profitable.
Second, I realized I’d been pouring hours into marketing strategies that weren’t delivering results. I was spreading myself too thin, trying to do everything instead of focusing on what was actually working.
Third, I saw how little I’d celebrated my wins. I’d closed deals I never thought I could, hit income milestones I would’ve killed for a year earlier, and yet, I barely stopped to appreciate any of it.
Why Reflection Works (and Why We Avoid It)
Reflection can feel uncomfortable, right? It’s easier to avoid looking back because we don’t want to dwell on what went wrong. Or maybe your year was so crazy that trying to remember it feels almost scary.
But here’s the thing: reflection isn’t about guilt or regret. It’s about clarity. And clarity is the one thing every business owner needs to succeed.
When I finally took the time to reflect, it became crystal clear where I needed to focus. I didn’t need more leads—I needed a system to close the ones I already had. I didn’t need to do more; I needed to do less, but better.
Let me guide you through how to do this for yourself.
How to Start Your Reflection
If you’re ready to try this for yourself, start with these three simple questions:
- What brought me the most joy in my business this year?
Was it a particular client? A seamless deal? A project that lit you up? - What was my biggest challenge, and how did I handle it?
Challenges are where the biggest lessons live. - What’s one thing I’d do differently next year?
This isn’t about beating yourself up—it’s about spotting opportunities for growth.
Set a timer for 20 minutes, grab your favorite notebook, and just start writing. You might be surprised by what comes up. Remember, there’s no judgment here.
Celebrate the Wins, Big and Small
Celebrating your wins is just as important as analyzing your struggles. When you pause to recognize how far you’ve come, you’re building momentum for what’s next.
This doesn’t have to be complicated. Maybe you treat yourself to a nice dinner, take a day off, or just sit quietly with a sense of pride.
Your brain has a reward center, and if you don’t reward yourself—even for the little wins—it’ll be harder to push through next time. Celebrate to build the resilience you need for long-term success.
Looking Forward with Purpose
After that first reflection session, my goal-setting process completely changed. I stopped focusing on vague numbers or trying to do it all, and I started focusing on one or two things that would make the biggest impact.
For me, that was building my Effortless Closing Machine—the funnel before the funnel. It became my master key, unlocking all my efforts and growing my income to over $558K in just my third year in real estate. Now, years later, that system continues to fuel a high six-figure income with half the effort—no matter the market.
My friend, you don’t have to figure it all out right now. Reflection isn’t about solving every problem; it’s about understanding where you are so you can move forward with intention.
Your Best Year Yet
So here’s my challenge to you: take some time this week to reflect on your year. You don’t need a fancy process or hours of free time. Just sit down, write it out, and let yourself take it all in—the wins, the lessons, and the possibilities.
Because here’s the truth: the key to growing your real estate business isn’t in doing more; it’s in doing what matters. And reflection is how you find out what that is.
